Look Past The Paint!

When buying a home it’s easy to get caught up on the seller’s choice of decor.  A dark paint color or oversized furniture can make a space feel much smaller than it really is or super trendy designs can wow us and take our focus off of what’s below the surface.  How do we look past what’s on the surface so we can accurately assess if a house is capable of meeting our needs.

Measure your own furniture and take some photos of your furniture with you on viewings. This will help you look past the seller’s furniture and help you visualize your own in the space. Knowing the dimensions of your furniture will allow you to accurately gauge whether your furniture will fit easily in the space.

Look beyond the walls. Though it’s human nature to react to colors, it’s important not to let color deter you from what could be a really great home. Paint is a cost effective way to add your own touch to a home – just as the sellers have done.

New flooring can be an easy solution to a dated home. Depending on the finishing you choose, it can be cost effective and easy to install. If you think that the home you are purchasing will need new flooring, it’s best to decide if it’s in the budget right away. It will be far easier and less time consuming to install the new flooring prior to move in.

Look closely at the cabinetry in the kitchen. Those replacing it can prove costly – sometimes solid wood cupboards can be refinished for a fraction of the cost. This type of improvement can be done over the course of a weekend.

Buying a new home is the biggest decision many of us will ever make. It’s important to not judge a book by its cover and not be distracted by “pretty” yet not functional spaces. Your MaxWell Challenge agent can walk you through the ins and outs of Edmonton Real Estate – Give Us A Call Today!
